Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My special needs students come into class eager to learn. While their learning abilities make it difficult for them to fully comprehend the content, when they can BECOME the math, they are engaged and can apply the math to the real world.

The students in my school are talented, personable, and intelligent.

They excel in music, and try to be engaged in academics; however, as my students have learning disabilities, it is a challenge for them to engage in much of the work, let alone comprehend it. While many students are able to learn by reading a book or watching a teacher do a problem, my special needs students truly excel when they are taught in a hands-on manner. Tests do not reflect my students' abilities, and while exams may be difficult, my students truly shine when they are part of the work, rather than people just trying to finish a task.

My Project

These items will help my students in two key areas of high school algebra. The first is "balancing equations." For many students, seeing an "x" with numbers next to it is very jarring. Many students learn to solve equations by writing and rewriting them, but that poses a challenge to my special needs students. With the balance, students "feel" the equation and can literally "balance" equations. The Motion Detectors will help students graph. Students are required to analyze a graph and infer a story from a paper graph; this technology allows them to BE the story and CREATE the graph. The Motion Detector attaches to a TI83, and based on a student's movement, will create a graph. This will allow students to learn by DOING, and incorporate 21st century technology. Lastly, the books I am requesting will provide the students with various other activities that will allow them to actively engage in their learning, rather than learning by copying a teacher.

Math is about more than just copying formulas; math is about discovering the way our world around us works.

Graphs and equations exist for us to represent what exists in our world. This project will allow students to engage in this process, and better understand the connection between math and their everyday lives. This engagement will allow them to better learn the common core curriculum and become "college ready."
