My Students

Richard Skemp said, "Math needs to be taught so 95% is understood and 5% memorized." This is what we are trying to achieve in our classroom. So many of my students come to me with only surface knowledge of how numbers work; my goal is that they leave me with a deep understanding.

While many of my students come from humble beginnings, they are excited about school and eager to learn.

They often have gaps in their math learning that we are trying to fill by using many approaches including technology and hands-on materials. We are a Title I school as well as a STEM middle school, meaning that we are dedicated to developing the ideas of science, technology, engineering, and math within our students. We want them to see how these ideas can help them to change the world. I am eager to contribute to our STEM philosophy and vision through this project.

My Project

My students will be using these materials in math stations, in small group instruction, as well as in whole group lessons. These manipulatives will help us understand the concepts of fractions, probability, basic facts, and geometry. The hands-on nature of the products will allow students to experience the concepts first hand and construct their own understanding of what the concepts mean so that they will always remember the ideas.

These materials will provide additional materials for my students to help supplement their learning and fill the gaps of learning from elementary school.

They will help my students to enjoy learning about math because the hands-on materials will build their confidence and allow them to actually experience the math in a concrete way.
