Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are afraid of math. This year, I would like to open their eyes and hearts to the possibilities of math and make them fluent in what they consider a foreign language.

I teach students in small group interventions.

They are the students who are struggling the most and are our most high-risk students. Many of them are English Language Learning students or our students with special needs. In spite of all these hurdles, my students are eager to learn. With patience and the right instruction, they love learning and jump for challenges.

My Project

My students need protractors, geometric 3D shapes, math facts cards, fraction tiles, place value cards, probability spinners, and other math manipulatives. These materials will be used in each lesson in the discovery phase, direct instruction, and while students practice independently. These materials will allow students to make something abstract become concrete. For example, when learning how to make equivalent fractions, students will use the fraction tiles to see that 2/4 is equal to 1/2. These materials will allow them to see and hold it. Another example is that when students are working with 3D shapes, they will have the opportunity to hold each shape to learn their name and count how many vertices and sides there are.

As of right now my classroom is empty.

There are no materials being provided by the school. These materials are essential to helping these students learn and get over their fear of math.
