Each morning, my students enter our classroom with big dreams and aspirations. Their brains are like sponges, taking in all new pieces of information. I teach in a Title I school in Newark, NJ where all students receive free or reduced-price breakfast and lunch.
Despite many hardships they may face outside of the classroom, my students are eager to learn and love coming to school to achieve greatness.
They learn to show kindness, compassion, and empathy towards their peers, and most importantly, themselves. I want my students to know that I believe in them and care about them as if they were my own children. They are the reason I step through the school doors each morning.
My Project
My students engage in daily literacy centers for about an hour to foster literacy development and growth. Students rotate through a variety of centers each day while I work on guided reading and/or phonics skills in a small group. We practice transitions and expectations from day one, so the kids are able to facilitate their own groups with minimal adult assistance.
Last year, I had one student enter my classroom on grade level - by June, almost 80% of my students were ready for second grade.
These materials will allow my students to participate in quality centers such as word work, digital, and collaborative. Practice makes perfect, and these materials will give them the repetition they need to master emergent and early literacy skills.
