My Students

At my school, almost 70% of the kids live in poverty. I work with some who have faced extremely difficult situations and others who just need a boost to get through the day. Yet in spite of it all, they are the most resilient and enthusiastic kids I have met, and they deserve nothing but the best!

Due to the high poverty rate at my school and the difficult situations some of my students are forced to deal with on a daily basis, social and problem-solving skills often have to take a back seat.

Without these crucial skills, it can often times be very difficult for them to live healthy, productive lives as adults. As the school social worker, I work with many students who have a difficult time participating in conventional school activities such as paying attention, following directions, and performing pencil/paper tasks. Since they have a hard time learning the way many other students do, activities have to be very interactive and visual in order for them to really learn. Using games and activities, students with ADHD, Autism Spectrum Disorder, emotional or behavior disorders, or other challenges can learn how to regulate their emotions, solve problems, and develop appropriate relationships.

My Project

My kids love playing games using beanbags or balls to score points if they demonstrate a skill or answer a question correctly. Unfortunately, use and enthusiasm has taken their toll on my existing beanbags and they can't be tossed without little beans ending up all over the place! My kids also love games that incorporate the skills we have been learning. I especially love watching their faces light up when they realize that they ARE able to succeed in the classroom. Unfortunately, many of the games we currently have are outdated and not as applicable to the current students. I constantly have students asking if I will be getting new ones! All these interactive toys will allow me to better serve these students, while allowing them to have fun as they learn.

Within my classroom, I strive to create an environment that demonstrates to all my kids that their differences and challenges are accepted.

These students are our future and I am committed to helping them learn the skills they will need to realize their own potential to change the world around them.
