Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I am a 3rd/4th Grade 12:1 Special Education teacher in a public elementary school in the South Bronx, where 97% of our students receive free or reduced-price lunch and 30% of our students live in temporary housing. My class consists of 12 bright students who are compassionate, enthusiastic, and have a great love for learning! My students have disabilities ranging from Learning Disabilities to Autism and bring so much love and light to the classroom.

During COVID-19, my students' neighborhood has been one of hardest-hit areas in NYC, and it continues to be heavily impacted.

My students and their families have faced economic, health, and emotional hardships during this time, but despite this, my students have remained strong. As we transitioned to remote learning, they didn't lose that bright light and continued to bring their enthusiasm and love for learning. As we went from gathering in our colorful classroom everyday to seeing each other through a computer screen, their learning only grew, but most importantly, our class became more united than ever.

My Project

While we are living in uncertain times, there is one thing that we do know for certain: that student learning will continue! My students need learning materials for the upcoming school year to continue learning in an engaged learning environment.

As students with disabilities, my students need hands-on learning materials to engage in learning from home.

As kinesthetic learners, it is often hard for them to grasp the content through a computer screen alone. They need concrete materials to aid them in their learning and thinking. This includes basic school supplies, such as notebooks and pencils, as well as learning aids, such as white boards, graphing paper, base-ten blocks, and number lines.

These hands-on materials will allow students to share and expand their thinking during at home practice and live computer instruction. They will be able to use these tools to engage in Number Talks, practice word work, formulate "Thinking Maps", and take part in other forms of instructional engagement. In addition, my students benefit from having color-coded materials, such as highlighters, colored pens, and coloring materials, to best support their visual and organizational needs.

My students need your support, now more than ever. As a result of COVID-19, our families are facing economic hardship and are unable to provide the learning materials that their child needs for the upcoming school year. By donating to this project, you are giving my students an opportunity to continue their love of learning with the supports that they greatly need. It will truly touch their hearts to know that they are supported and loved by so many. Thank you!
