Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Our school has departmentalized the 5th grade in order to prepare the students for the transition to middle school. This school year, I have three groups of 5th graders who are a very energetic and enthusiastic bunch! Most of the students in my classes face different struggles in their home lives and at school.

We have welcomed new friends to their first experience in an American school.

These friends immigrated from different countries such as the Dominican Republic, El Salvador, and Columbia. When they arrived they did not speak english. Unfortunately, they struggle with mathematics because they do not have the foundational math skills to approach the grade level standards. It is a difficult transition for anyone to move to a new country but the students and I are finding ways to keep our new friends engaged, all the while learning!

My Project

The Osmo learning system can be used with iPads. It contains objects, and educational tools to keep kids engaged.

As a facilitator in the classroom, I can guide students to practice spelling, vocabulary, reading, math, creative thinking and even learning to run a business with the multiple Osmo kits.

Simultaneously, students will be able to work towards meeting the learning standards in math, reading, and social studies. It can truly provide students with a unique learning experience. With the ENL's (English as a New Language) Learners they will be able to acquire language faster and enhance their math skills by working with hands-on tools that will keep their attention.
