As a second-year teacher in District 75, New York City's special education district for students with severe disabilities, I am fortunate enough to be working with the same group of third-fifth grade students I worked with last year. My students with autism have a wide range of interests and abilities, and for many of them, computer programs are an effective and motivating way to complete independent work. Matching activities, both on screen and off, form the basis of pre-emergent reading skills. Though some of my non-verbal students may not master reading in a traditional way, these matching skills are essential to their ability to communicate through pictures and written words. Unfortunately, several also lack the motor skills necessary to use a conventional computer and need an adult to work the mouse while they point to pictures on the screen. A touchscreen would allow my students more independence and more mastery with these computer programs and many others, for both education and recreation. Thank you for your consideration.
