My Project

How do I teach STEM on a budget of 69 cents per student for the entire school year? This is the question that I asked myself. As the STEM resource teacher, I have the privilege of educating over 700 students in Kindergarten through fifth grade. How can create 140 educational and engaging STEM lessons?

Recyclable materials along with DonorsChoose donations will make for a successful STEM school year.

First thing on my agenda is to create a STEM store for grades three to five. Students may select and purchase their project materials using our fake STEM money. The cash register will provide security for the STEM money. The store will consist of a cashier and two sales positions for students while providing students with an economics opportunity.

All of the other materials will be used for STEM projects. Our focus for the second quarter is, "How does weather affect our community?" We will be using science, technology, engineering, and math to build structures to protect our communities in simulated natural disasters such as hurricanes, snowstorm, earthquake, lava eruption, and flooding. The building blocks be used initially to build prior knowledge on how to assemble a structure. How can I use blocks to create a structure to withstand the outdoor elements? How do the elements affect my structure? The flat trays will be used as the base of our tests. The craft glue and hot glue will adhere our recyclable materials together to create houses, supports, and/or walls. The pompom balls will simulate the snow. The fan will simulate the wind.

My students are kind, friendly, and eager to learn. I strive to provide my students with STEM lessons that are both academic and engaging.
