Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

A typical day for us is reading, word study, writing, math and health/science. We are (majority) Transitional Kindergarten and are project based and very hands on. My favorite quote is "Education is not a bucket to be filled but a fire to be lit." Our end of year goal is that the fire be lit within.

I have a combination classroom: 14 transitional Kindergarten students and 10 Kindergarten students.

All my students are second language learners. Except for one, their home language is Spanish. My students love school and love to learn. They try hard and are eager to get to work. The majority of our learning is through hands-on projects where paint or glue (sometimes both) is involved. Our large school has only recently become a traditional school. It is located in a blue collar area where the majority of parents' speak a different language. All students are eligible for a free government sponsored lunch and within the last year we have had two graffiti incidents. Several teachers grew up in the area and partly for this reason there is a great sense of pride for our school. In the last 5 years our scores have also increased significantly, adding to the sense of camaraderie and teamwork that you feel walking down the school halls.

My Project

My students are young Kindergarteners who learn best by playing and hands on activities. For example, when they are learning sight words they have puzzles they need to put together and glue. During science time they learn about the parts of a plant by putting the pieces together, labeling and gluing. When learning about the colors of the rainbow, students paint the colors of the rainbow. By the end of the day there is hardly any room left on the floor with the various items left to dry. Moving around the classroom would be so much easier if we had a drying rack where everything can be neatly stacked to dry in a vertical manner.

My poor students are always having to step over someones work.

Because our classroom is not large, we often have to limit our projects so that we have floor space to walk around on at the end of the day. If we had a drying rack we could do more, learn more, move more!
