Students at my school love the library and are always welcomed to come in and study, work on the computers, and just relax and enjoy a good book. However, library/media center is not only a place for read and study, it is becoming a place for students to discover new skills and explore creativity through hands-on learning opportunities through the creation of a maker-space. Our students come from a variety of backgrounds so it is important that they all feel equally comfortable in their media center and have equal access to tools that encourage creativity and demand practical skills that will guide them into high school and eventually higher learning and the workforce.
My Project
It is vitally important that students see technology as more than just the Chromebooks they use for their classwork. Technology that goes beyond laptops and desktop computers can often be found in a MakerSpace room, which houses a variety of hands-on learning tools. I am working on creating a room for students to have access to 3D and sublimation printers, robotic kits, Legos, and various other tools for learning. Another machine that I would like students to have access to is a SEWING MACHINE! Sewing projects will be incorporated as a project option in all classes, from creating dolls based on characters in a novel or from history to measurements for math class or creating blankest or masks as community service. The project opportunities are endless in a MakerSpace, especially with a sewing machine!
