My Students

Do you remember when almost every school task was paper and pencil? Well, studies have shown that independent, engaging activities such as phonics puzzles, magnetic word building boards, and sight word games actually help young students build reading skills more quickly - and it's WAY MORE FUN!

My classroom is full of bright-eyed little 5- and 6-year-olds that LOVE to come to school.

They are eager to learn each and every day, in a Title I neighborhood school in Southern California. The backgrounds of my students are as varied as that of our entire country. I, and all the teachers at my school, am very dedicated to helping our students achieve their full potential. Unfortunately, with cuts continuing to be made in education year after year, the resources we need to keep students engaged and wanting to learn more are in short supply, or are no longer supplied at all. I want to be able to continue to make my students want to come to school because it is so much fun to learn in my class! Paper and pencil activities are fine for some assessments and sporadic practice at this age level. But my students deserve engaging activities that not only help them learn, they will learn faster because they are enjoying the activities and will stay engaged for longer periods of time.

My Project

My students will be able to work independently at their desk or a designated location in the classroom with phonics puzzles, word-building boards, and sight word games. These activities allow the students to try to be successful on their own, and then they can check their own work when they are finished. The activities have self-checks built right in! Since the students will be engaged in independent activities and they can check their own work, I will be allowed the time needed to work in small groups with students to read at their level, to review areas of difficulty for them, and to give each student the support they need each day during this independent activity time. Instead of being asked to complete mundane worksheets so I can work with a small group, my students will be excited and engaged and will love coming to school! If students love coming to school because it is fun, they will be more successful in their educational journey. It all starts here in kindergarten.

A fully engaged student is a student that is LEARNING! Paper and pencil tasks certainly show that work has been completed, but it does not show that learning has taken place. Walk into my classroom and see students manipulating phonics puzzles, magnetic word builders, etc., and you will witness the miracle of true learning!
