My Students

Early elementary students with special needs learn best in small groups. Distractions - no matter how small - can turn their little heads away from the lesson. Therefore students that are not at my table require hands-on learning challenges which capture their attention and limit distractions.

This year I have ten students with special needs who range in age from five to eight years old.

You wouldn't know by looking at them but they have learning disabilities, cognitive delays, Autism, ADHD, and other health impairments. Many of them cannot read or do basic math skills and require mostly 1:1 teaching to be successful. These ten awesome kiddos attend a public elementary school in a high poverty-rate area. Our special needs classroom is self-contained which means they stay with me for their entire day. They'll most likely continue in special education classes throughout their school career. But they can and do learn and they never fail to impress me year after year.

My Project

Like any typical child, children with special needs crave new challenges and learn best when given hands-on learning materials and experiences. Math and Literacy center rotation should be constant to keep their attention and keep them thinking and working. Add to that fact that nine of my ten students are boys with a lot of energy and you can imagine all the movement in my small classroom! I'm requesting 16 early learning math and literacy centers. These centers include everything from counting, sorting, shapes, alphabet awareness, beginning and ending sounds, sight word recognition. They're "instant learning centers" and include picture directions for non-readers which is perfect for my students. My plan is to introduce these centers in small groups one by one and give the students the opportunity to utilize them while I am teaching other students at my small group table.

You can make a difference to my ten students!

Donate to my cause and my students will have fewer distractions when they're learning new material at my table. With fewer distractions, our lessons will be longer and they'll get more out of them. Only with strong small group lessons can students with special needs be successful. You can help make that happen!
