This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

Third grade math is a time when learners tackle a variety of new topics. Fractions, multiplication facts, division, and perimeter / area are new topics that learners explore. Last year, my 3rd grade math students tackled perimeter and area by drawing out shapes and using graph paper, but I found that a hands-on component was lacking. Students knew what perimeter and area were, but the understanding of those ideas wasn’t as deep as it needed to be.

When students experience math through manipulatives, the concepts become real to them and the learning experience is one that stays with them.

The geoboards in this project will allow students to explore both perimeter and area. Students will be able to make regular polygons, count the unit squares and side lengths, and connect those to perimeter and area. Instead of just tracing on graph paper, students will construct the shapes and will be able to adjust the units as needed.

The foam shapes will help us study the attributes of geometric shapes, such as parallel lines, intersecting lines, 90-degree angles, etc. When we drew the shapes last year, we were missing the hands-on component of sorting shapes and being able to examine physical shapes. This item will allow us to pick up those shapes, manipulate them with our hands, and study them.
