Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
"I hear and I forget. I see and I remember. I do and I understand". Geometry is so much more than the ability to identify a shape when asked! I want my students to feel, hear, and see geometry!
My students attend a school where 100 percent of the students receive free lunch.
Our elementary school serves a population of over 1000 students. These students have varied backgrounds and the entire staff tries their best to meet their needs. My students are eager to learn and absorb what is taught to them!
My Project
The materials are primarily to be used for hands-on experiences with geometry (shapes). Students need to go beyond identifying what a square or cube is. They need to understand the properties of these shapes and their applications to the real world. Why are triangles often used in building shapes? Which 2D shapes (such as a square) combine to make up 3D shapes (such as a cube)? Can any shapes be combined into other shapes? My students will be able to use these materials to answer these questions through their own problem solving and manipulation. They can build; construct; and deconstruct shapes! These materials also include several books that have a geometry emphasis to further cement their understanding of geometric principles.
Education is more than getting a right answer on a test.
With these materials, my students can go beyond correctly identifying a shape. They will be able to understand what shapes feel like, as well as their properties and how they can be used in a variety of situations. I believe this will have relevance beyond their school years. They will need to use problem solving, creativity, and imagination! These materials are durable and can be used for many years to come!
