My Students

Hello, I am a special education teacher at a school in Brooklyn. I teach an 8:1:1 classroom setting with students in grades K-2. The students in my classroom have autism and a handful have speech or language impairments. My students are kinesthetic and visual learners. Currently, school is conducted through remote learning due to COVID-19. Because of this, my students are not able to get the full benefit of the lessons and have all of their needs met.

My students require hands-on learning to better understand the concepts being taught and to work on their fine motor and physical skills.

I would like to send educational materials and supplies to the students' homes. If the students have supplies at home, both students and parents will be more willing to engage in learning.

My Project

Because my students are kinesthetic and visual learners, they thrive on hands-on projects and activities. Distance learning takes away from this aspect. Although technology is a great asset, students with special needs cannot rely on it solely during distance learning.

I would like to give each of my students some supplies/materials that they can use to participate in projects and activities related to our learning topics during distance learning.

By having these supplies readily available, student participation will increase. It will also ease some of the financial pressure placed on families during COVID-19. Students can use the paper, crayons, paint, and glue to create hands-on projects, crafts, and writing activities. The playdough will be used as an alternate format in which students can submit their activities. Students can create models of characters/objects or scenes from a text. Additionally, it will also be used as a sensory item to channel energy and maintain focus.
