Hands-on Building at Home: LEGO Challenges During Remote Learning
Help me give my students each their own individual bag of LEGO blocks to take home during virtual learning to complete hands-on STEM challenges, develop 21st century skills, and practice the Engineering Design Process.

A chain reaction of support starts with one share.
As a STEM teacher and librarian, I have the privilege of working with 320 pre-kindergarten through fifth-grade students in our library and in individual classrooms. The integration of STEM learning experiences has been nothing short of magical, helping my diverse students find confidence, passion, empowerment, success, and creative ways to express their learning. Many of my students will be the first in their families to attend and graduate college. Helping spark an interest in STEM for my youngest learners can ignite a passion and change the trajectory for their futures. When you support my classroom, you become a part of their stories and successes.
Providing my students with authentic STEM learning experiences will give them opportunities to develop 21st-century skills, establish a growth mindset, and empower them to overcome any obstacles standing in their way and accomplish their goals and dreams.
My students are energetic, eager to learn, and excited to be in school. They love hands-on learning opportunities and having a voice and choice in their learning as they become empowered learners. I know they will deeply appreciate your generosity and support of their classroom.
My Project
While we are starting the year off with face to face instruction, students may have to pivot to remote learning at a moment's notice. I want to provide my students with highly engaging, hands-on learning experiences during virtual learning.
While many of students' remote learning activities will be completed on a device, I want to provide my students with activities that require them to explore, experiment and engineer with their hands.
My project will provide each student with their own individual bag of LEGO blocks to use for engineering challenges while at home during remote learning. Many of my students do have have access to LEGO bricks or STEM materials at home, so they will get to keep these LEGO bags at home even after the remote learning is over. As I work to help my students build their at-home libraries, I also feel it is important to provide them with educational STEM materials in their homes as well.
Students will begin by learning about architect Emily Pilloton from the If/Then Collection. Then they will have a variety of engineering challenges to complete with their bag of LEGO. They will then use their device to share their creations with their classrooms during blog posts or video conferencing. I feel this will also help students build 21st century skills while learning from home in addition to providing them practice with the Engineering Design Process.
Thank you so much for supporting my project and STEM education! I know my students will be thrilled to have their very own bag of LEGO blocks!
