I am a Teach for America teacher, teaching first grade in a high poverty charter school in Washington DC. My 19 wonderful first graders are all African-American and receive free/reduced lunches.

Needless to say, my school is not well resourced. In many cases, I can create materials to supplement what my kids are missing. However, I have been struggling with math supplies. It is incredibly important for children this age to complete hands on activities in order to make sense of math. We don't have the materials needed to do this.

The kit I requested has play money, rulers, geometric shapes, dice, clocks, tangrams, and numbers/operations cubes. When my students can do something hands on, it means their brains are on. These materials will be used daily. In first grade, students must master addition and subtraction facts. If they can practice them with number cubes, they can see why 2+2=4, instead of just memorizing the fact. The rulers will be used to teach measurement, which is also an important concept that young children need to master to understand their surroundings. Play money and clocks serve obvious purposes as well. All year long, these materials will help my students get proof that math works instead of just taking my word for it.

I want these children to overcome the obstacles society has placed in front of them. They have less than their peers elsewhere in the country. Their parents have less time and resources to spend with them at home. Our school has less money for resources. It's not right. You can help make a big difference in their math skills by making a little donation. My smart, wonderful children and I thank you.
