Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

The students in my pre-K class are a second family. In September they were nervous about leaving their own families. Over time we got past the tears and clinging to parents. With much nurture, our room became a home away from home. I watched as children ran to greet each other with daily hugs.

Now we are all in our respective homes doing distance learning.

There are many children in my class who live in homeless shelters or low-income housing. Our school is situated in a borough hardest hit by Covid-19. The children can not leave their shelters or apartments. Most do not have learning resources other than digital devices provided by the Department of Education. They are losing out on socializing and the use of classroom resources that pre-k students need to continue their educational development. This time of social distancing is taking a toll on their readiness for kindergarten.

My Project

When we left school before quarantine I never thought we would not be back again until September. Living in a low-income neighborhood, most of the students do not have educational materials at home. The majority of our learning has been digital. At first, this was working, but now that schools will not reopen until September, they need more to be ready for kindergarten.

Developmentally, Pre-K children should be building and creating.

They should be experiencing trial and error to learn how things work. These materials will give them a chance to put their minds to work in a real-life way.

These materials are open-ended and will allow them to access all subject areas, but especially math and letter recognition. With these materials in each child's home, I can assign developmentally appropriate activities and know that they can be completed. They will also be used to help students continue their learning through the summer months as well.
