Help Mrs. Thompson

I teach 7th and 8th grade English Language Learners. There are over 7 different languages in my classroom at all times. I teach life science, physical science, and an elective "Body Works". Our school is recognized as a "National Schools to Watch" and a "California Distinguished School", with a teaching staff that strives to meet the diverse needs of our students.

These students need hands-on learning activities in order to develop their English skills as well as understand meaningful content. Heart disease is one of the leading causes of death in the United States and as a health science teacher I feel that it is my duty to stress the importance of a healthy diet for the heart. When students understand the function and structure of their heart they will further see the importance of protecting this valuable organ.

In order to teach these ELD students, I will need ten cow hearts, to show them how fat builds up around the heart and constricts its ability to function properly. Also,ten stethoscopes will provide students with the opportunity to study heart rate, and the novel experience of hearing their own heartbeat for the first time.

With your help these English Language Learners will be one step closer to understanding English and heart safety. Also, there is a potential for some students to develop the goal of becoming a doctor, heart specialist, or other health professional.
