Hands-on Activities

Help me give my students hands-on materials to help them practice new skills. Worksheets are great, but children with Autism and learning disabilities learn best through play and real-life scenarios.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are language delayed children from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds. Many are on the Autism Spectrum or are diagnosed with learning disabilities. My students come from a low socio-economic background. They want to learn and do well, but do not always have enough engaging materials available to them.

My Project

These materials will provide my young students (Kindergarten through 2nd grade) with hands-on materials and toys to use during their speech- language therapy sessions. Children learn best through play, but these types of materials are not always available within the school community. The donations for this project will not only supply these opportunities for my current caseload of 37 students, but also future students.

Below is how I will use each material in my project:

-The create a burger stacker is the perfect opportunity for students to practice the skills of following directions to create an order as well as practice the pragmatic skills involved in ordering and/or working in a restaurant.

-The create a scene felt board will help student work on identifying and labeling spatial concepts, describing pictures and creating/ writing stories.

-The hear myself sound phone will allow students to hear exactly how they are producing their speech sounds to identify their errors and practice correct productions.

-The positional words resource box will allow students to work on learning spatial concepts and practicing using these concepts in play.

-The CVC reading game will provide students with the opportunity to practice their phonemic awareness skills which is the precursor to reading. Students will target reading CVC words as well as identifying the initial, medial, and final sounds of the words.
