Hands Off Our Hands-On Tools

Help me give my students the hands-on materials like linking cubes, base ten rods and ones, as well as a place to store them. They will need these manipulatives to learn important foundational math skills.

My Students

Do you remember not what, but how, you learned math in first grade? My 5, 6, and 7 year old students always love math time, and they learn best with hands-on, concrete experiences. They light up when they get to use their "tools" to discover how to find solutions to problems.

I teach inquisitive and enthusiastic 1st grade students who love to learn, and then love to show their peers how they solved a problem.

Our class is part of a small, public Title I elementary school with a large population of second language learners. Although these youngsters come from the same local community, their socioeconomic and multicultural backgrounds are quite varied. I love that about our group! We all have so much to share with each other.

My Project

I am requesting linking cubes, foam base ten materials, and individual storage boxes. These colorful linking cubes and base ten manipulatives will give my students the concrete opportunities they need to discover and then strengthen their beginning math skills. The linking cubes will engage my students as they learn to add, subtract (separate and compare), and when they use them as nonstandard units to measure objects. The foam place value materials will allow my students to see how larger numbers are composed of groups of tens and ones and help them understand the concept of regrouping. The plastic pencil boxes will give them a safe way to store these materials.

I had a real "ah ha" moment last year when we returned to the classroom after being remote for so long.

I discovered real value in allowing my students to have control of their own math learning tools instead of passing them out and collecting them after each lesson. That practice was initiated by the need to prevent students from sharing materials, but I found it also saved a lot of time, the students took better care of their "own" manipulatives, and they spent more time using them as tools to experiment and learn.

After creating individual student tool kits to be used at home during remote learning, and second sets to be used and then kept by those who returned to campus, my math tool cupboards are now bare. I would love to be able to set my students up for success and safety with their own set of math materials to put their hands on and to use whenever and however they choose as they tackle the new math skills they will encounter this year.
