My Students

MV is a diverse student body with many children from military families stationed at nearby Hill Air Force base, gifted and talented students from all over the north part of the school district who have been accepted in the two accelerated learner programs, and a variety of suburban neighborhood children including special needs learners.

Some of my Kindergarten students have special needs that limit the kind of movement, dance and body percussion we can engage in as a class.

My Project

I have been using handbells to help the Kindergartners learn the musical alphabet, rhythm, pitch and melody. I have one set of handbells so most students must wait until the second, third or fourth time through a song for a chance to hold and play one bell. They do their best to wait patiently, but they would be more engaged, and progress more quickly as musicians if opportunities to participate and practice were more frequent.

Handbells make excellent instruments for these students because of the students' developing dexterity, the curriculum of letters/colors, and the durability and portability of the bells.
