Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I teach physical education at a Title I elementary school in Harlem, NY. I am very lucky that I get to spend time with all of the students in our school, they are enthusiastic about learning and love to move.

Many of our students have a hard time focusing on their classwork after sitting for long periods of time, they need to get up and move throughout the day in order to be successful.

Unfortunately, students are only scheduled for PE 1 to 2 times per week so on most days the only time they get to move around is the 20 minutes during recess.

My Project

I am working with one of our school's occupational therapists to create sensory paths in some of our school's hallways. Sensory paths are areas in the school where students can go to perform a series of exercises when they need a brain break.

Research has shown that physical activity helps to improve academic success.

High-intensity activities like the ones in a sensory pathway get the blood pumping, helping children to sit still and focus for longer periods of time in the classroom.

The floor stickers and decals will be placed around the school giving all students the opportunity to take a break and refocus.
