I'm an inclusion teacher at a Title I school in Hawaii. There might be negative stereotypes about the people on the Leeward coast of Oahu, but they are only stereotypes. My students come from a variety of backgrounds, from single-parent households and families with two working parents with multiple jobs, to families with comfortable living situations. With their diverse backgrounds, they all have a few things in common.
My students are enthusiastic, caring individuals who love learning and hands-on activities.
I teach an amazing class of eight and nine year-olds. Regardless of what life throws at them, they always show up to school ready to learn, do their best work, and cheer each other on. They help nurture each other's growth in and out of the classroom. They are determined to make each day better than yesterday, and I am lucky to call them my students.
My Project
My students need items to keep their hair out of their faces and in good condition. Many of my students ask for hair ties because they don't have any at home. I have a small bag in case of emergencies, but this year, I've gone through so many. The brushes and combs will allow them to keep their hair knot free, while hair ties and clips will keep their hair out of their faces. Hawaii's weather changes are very subtle, so many families don't think to give their children lip balm for when their lips get dry and become cracked.
Students learn best when their basic needs are met and they look and feel confident.
