My Students
Between Gandhi's infamous quote, "You must be the change you wish to see in the world," and the Disney Planet Challenge motto, "Imagine Your Planet," my students have been inspired to be the change they wish to see in their planet.
I teach at a fine and performing arts charter school in Michigan, a state with a rather large unemployment rate.
Some of my students have parents who have been laid off for years. They are struggling more than they ever have before. However, you would not know it if you met my students. They remain optimistic and have an unbelievable zest for life.
My Project
We are requesting containers to collect and test water samples from our state (the Great Lakes State). We are also going to have other classes throughout the country use these containers to test water quality near them. We will use apps on the iPad to graph the data comparing the quality of water based on regions of the country and community type (urban, suburban, and rural). Additionally, the students are performing a play for the school about the negative effects that pollution can have. They are going to use the camera connection kit to put a video of their play on the iPad. They will then use iMovie on the iPad to edit their play and upload it for the world to see.
When students are inspired, it is my job as their educator to do everything I can to foster that passion.
My students want to see their state, the "Great Lakes State" have great, PURE lakes once again. This project is important because it has the potential to change the way people feel about and deal with pollution. Perhaps more importantly, it will change the way these students view their role on our planet.
