A chain reaction of support starts with one share.
Students come to me as struggling readers. I strive to motivate my students to succeed daily in a positive environment, and by offering opportunities for the students to truly make a difference. I spark their interest, encouraging and guiding them to advocate for endangered species in our state.
My elementary school is a small school in an extremely rural community.
Most live in poverty and have limited life experiences. I teach them for an hour a day for reading intervention. Many have learning disabilities so reading is difficult for them and their lack of skills effects all academic areas. They have struggled for some time and do not enjoy reading. With passion, motivation, patience, and enthusiasm, I provide opportunities for them to read about and help endangered species. I am a manatee enthusiast. The manatee visits our parish waters every year and also had the highest death rate in recorded history in 2013. My passion is contagious and they all want to help and learn about manatees. They also can choose animals that interest them to research and advocate for. Activities teach them how to read, about writing, the political process, branches of government, science, and how to speak up for something they believe in. My students become advocates for life and learn to read!
My Project
Using the books and other research materials from this project, students will have the needed books to learn about endangered species. They will also use the supplies ( paper, pencils, ink, poster board, and markers) to complete projects and publish research projects, and most importantly advocate for the animal(s) of their choice. Students will use paper and pencil to write letters to local, state, and national legislators on behalf of their chosen endangered species. They will produce projects and displays, using the supplies, which will be designed to educate other students throughout the school. Students will develop plans on paper for helping the endangered species of our state and will present these to Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries as well as local news media for public awareness. All of these activities will serve to help them become better readers and teach them to advocate for endangered species. Books will be used for similar activities for years to come!
Donations to this project will enhance the lives of struggling readers and students with learning disabilities.
By learning about endangered species in our state and how to advocate, they will see that they can make a difference! Students are more eager to read things they are interested in and this project provides a plethora of research materials for their use. This project will empower the students to advocate for any cause they believe in, but most importantly will help them learn to read!
