My Students

I work in an social and economically diverse urban school. 57% are on free or reduced lunch (this is not including a number of students who probably qualify, but are unable to or do not know how to apply). This number continues to increase over the years.

Our school is ethnically diverse, especially for the area, as the majority of our students are African American, Hispanic or two or more races.

I currently teach six classes (an overload): five of World History-ten and one (two semester classes) of Wisconsin Studies 11/12.

I have a number of students with various special behavioral, emotional and learning needs that, due to limited SPED staff (as a result of budget cuts). We have limited technology and, since this is history class, do a lot of reading and writing and not all students are able to access all of the information in the same manner.

My Project

Many of my students are coming to World History with a limited understanding of history in general. They have been taught to memorize and repeat what someone has told them or what they have read in a textbook versus being exposed to a variety of sources and developing their own opinions on what may have happened.

Jarrod Diamond's book has opened their eyes to how infinitesimally multidimensional history is.

I want them to be the historian. Based on the information they have, what can they deduce happened?

Diamond tells "history" through an alternative lens. He examines three vehicles that lead to the rise and fall of civilizations. Rather than just learning about dates and events, students are able to make connections between cultures and civilizations from a global perspective. They see how world history is global - events did not happen in isolation and cannot be compartmentalized. Collective learning is the central theme of my classes. Interactions between people resulted in a variety of outcomes depending on their cultures, resources, technology, and other interactions.

My students have been engaged with the three part documentary series, but I would like them to have more interaction with the text as well. As we do not have many copies, I am limited to a few excerpts from the book during the year.

I am requesting a classroom set of Guns, Germs, and Steel: The Fates of Human Societies (thirty-five) to start with so students can read in class (in groups or independently) rather than have to photocopy segments. I would eventually like to have enough copies so I can assign them to students just as I would a textbook.
