My Students

Students in this class are a part of the DOE's District 75, which is our special education district. Students in this district are overcoming odds, many of which are coming from low socioeconomic areas and attend a Title I school.

Despite the excitement of coming back to in-person learning, many are having a hard time adjusting back into the routine of being in the classroom.

For many of our students, routine and structure are so important. Many students in my class have not been in a classroom setting in over a year and a half. Adjusting back to in-person classes is not an easy task and providing them with the encouragement and support to feel comfortable and confident in their new routines can help make the transition much smoother.

My Project

In my classroom, to promote on-task and good behaviors, we try to reward our students often for doing the right thing. These positive behaviors are more likely to persist when there is a positive consequence, like a reward, that occurs afterward.

Not only can rewards encourage good behaviors, but they can also increase student self-esteem and improve their relationships with themselves and the adults in the room.

Instead of hearing negative language, such as no, do not do that, or that is not acceptable behavior. Having positive language and a positive consequence when they do the right thing instead can promote a child's confidence in themselves and their behavior.

The contents of this project will help to make that possible. By rewarding students with gumball turns and prizes, not only will it be an exciting thing they want to earn, but they will continue to work to improve their self-esteem and self-confidence.
