Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

What if you were lucky enough to study guitar in school and you wanted to take care of your instrument but there was no proper storage unit where you could return your guitar each day? Well, that is currently the problem with our music room. We have the guitars, but no unit for organizing them.

The students in the guitar program are middle school students and they love their guitars and want to take them home everyday to practice.

Like all students they need help learning how to care for their instruments and how systems work. We currently have very limited space for 50 guitars! The demographics of the school are approximately 85% Latino, 13% African American and 2% Asian and Middle Eastern. 98% qualify for free lunch. The music programs offered at school provides the only music instruction these students will have access to. These students respond very well to guitar class, and for many it is their favorite class where they can take risks and be creative and show off. Students perform in three large scale concerts per year and many smaller informal events during the year.

My Project

We are one of the few public schools to offer a vibrant guitar ensemble program, but we are struggling. We do not have a budget and most things are donated or provided for out of the teacher's own pocket. We currently have 50 donated guitars, but the guitars did not come with storage units. It is a constant struggle to keep the instruments safe and cared for. Most of the guitars have soft cases and cannot stand up on their own. What is needed for the students to practice care and organization are guitar racks that will allow the students to place their guitar in a designated area every day. I am often teaching a class when students bring in their guitar in the morning and it is very difficult for students to practice signing in their guitar and put it in a proper location when the guitars cannot stand upright on their own. If we had guitar racks it would help these students take care of the instruments and send the message to the students that their instruments are valuable.

Can you imagine what a library would look like without bookshelves?

What message would that send to students about the value of books? How would you find the book you wanted if there were no shelves? If instruments do not have proper storage units, it is kind of like a library without shelves. Please give our students a proper place to store their instruments and help them how to care for the things they love.
