My Students

"Music expresses that which cannot be put into words and that which cannot remain silent." -Victor Hugo

One of my students recently asked me, "Mr. C., when are you going to teach me how to play guitar?" Research has shown how studying music may help students' cognitive and emotional development.

We are a brand new public school currently instructing our first year of 6th graders in East New York, Brooklyn. We receive title I and title III funding, but are still short on resources and materials. We have an amazing group of 117 students who fill our school with life and energy. East New York is one of New York City's most impoverished neighborhoods and it has one of the highest crime-rates in the city. Our students do not have the same opportunities and resources available to them as students in more privileged communities, and they face challenges that students in other communities are not asked to overcome. My students do not have the opportunity to take electives such as music or art. They do not have gym every day. They are in need of more creative outlets.

My Project

With your help, I hope to start an afterschool guitar program at our school. Our students will benefit tremendously from being exposed to music in an educational setting and having a fun, creative outlet. I have been playing the guitar for over ten years and perform in New York City. My students have seen me perform in school and are eager to learn. With your help, I will be able to purchase guitars for our afterschool guitar club. The club will meet after school, but students will also have the opportunity to play the guitars during lunch. Thank you so much for your support! Your donation will have a big impact on the life of a student.

By helping us get this project, you will be promoting music in our school.

When we have budget cuts, music is always the subject that suffers and the children miss the opportunity to explore their creative side. Through your donation, I hope our students will have the opportunity to learn to play the guitar and create music.
