My Students

The guitar and ukulele programs I teach are unique. We offer kids a chance to develop skills in beginning programs and then develop them later in intermediate and advanced classes. We are a Title I school recently deemed the most diverse school in the nation. And the diversity in our school is exemplified by kids from all cultures embracing the guitar and ukulele.

There's something about playing ukulele and guitar that brings kids together.

I love seeing them get up on stage for the first time and play for their friends and family. Even students in beginning classes are able to take part in performances throughout the year. But many choose to stay with the program and refine their techniques in performing ensembles. Our Advanced Guitar class performs at the Anchorage Folk Festival. And the Advanced Ukulele Ensemble has traveled to Hawaii several times to play at the Waikoloa Ukulele Festival.

My Project

These method books will be used daily in class to teach kids the fundamentals of playing their instrument. Our guitar and ukulele programs fill the gap that Band/Choir/Orchestra classes leave of kids who love music, but still feel like outsiders when it comes to playing it in school. Kids who gravitate toward guitar/ukulele in high school often have no experience with playing music while they were in earlier grades. These are typically the kids who didn't take any music classes in Middle School.

So it’s important give them curriculum that both challenges their skills and also explains the basics of music theory.

In a classroom setting, these books help guide kids through starting to read notes and tablature as well as teach basic playing techniques.
