My Students

Should reading in the science classroom be limited to reading the textbook? Of course not. Reading scientific newspaper articles will boost my students' science literacy.

My school, a Pre K - 8th grade school, is one of the highest poverty schools in my school district.

I teach science to fifth and sixth graders. My students participate in a variety of student-centered hands-on activities. Too many of my students are at risk of performing below grade level across subject areas. I am committed to closing the achievement gap for my students. To accomplish this, I offer students an enriched learning environment by integrating science into other subject areas and pushing students to use higher order thinking skills when engaging in scientific inquiry.

My Project

Having students interact with articles in Science World promises to capture the excitement I am requesting funds to purchase 30 subscriptions to Science World magazine. This will allow me to share this wonderful resource with 50+ sixth grade students. Having students interact with articles in Super Science promises to capture the excitement of science. I will use simple guided reading techniques when students read Science World scientific newspaper articles. The articles feature attention-grabbing photos and connects to the three core curriculum areas of Life, Earth, and Physical sciences. This resource will help me narrow the achievement gap for my students by implementing literacy across disciplines in a manner that students will find relevant and engaging.

I am committed to helping my students read, think, write and speak like scientists.

It is crucial that my students grow as readers and view reading to learn science as engaging and necessary. I can realize this goal with the help of generous donors. Please help my students continue to expose my students to the world of science by helping me get Science World into their hands.
