My Students

My class is made up of a very diverse population. We are a fine arts magnet school which means we receive students from all over the city through a lottery process. This means my class is made up of a variety of different ethnic backgrounds, socioeconomic backgrounds and also includes diverse learners.

The students do not have to test in, so my kindergarten class often has students who have never been to preschool to students reading at a 2nd grade level, and everyone in between!

One thing they all usually have in common is an enthusiasm for school and learning.

My Project

Small group instruction, especially guided reading groups, is one of my favorite things about teaching kindergarten. I get to work with students who have similar needs and focus on what skills they need to practice. With 30 kids in a class though, I sometimes have up to seven different groups with all different needs! By the time I pull the leveled readers, follow up activities, and my binder to keep records and take notes; I have bins, books and supplies all over the table. I usually end up putting this next to me on the floor and often drop supplies, misplace papers and have to sift through books.

This is why a good storage system would help us immensely!

There are more than enough bins to store each reading groups' materials separately. It also has a top shelf to display items or keep items that multiple groups may use. There are two hanging organizers on the sides of the cart to store supplies needed for follow up activities. There is even a pocket chart that can display words, sentences or poetry to help with fluency. The entire cart is on wheels in case I choose to switch up the meeting place, which often happens in kindergarten where there are so many projects going on throughout the week. This could also be easily moved to a separate location if I choose to pull groups out of the classroom.

This storage system will reduce the time it takes for transition, set up and clean up. This leaves me with more minutes a day (not to mention more energy) to spend on quality instruction for students.
