Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I have 32 of the most amazing fourth grade students who are a dynamic mixture of general education, special education, and ELL students. One thing that makes our school unique is that we are a universal poverty school, so all students are entitled to free meals. We have breakfast in the class, lunch, and many students stay after school so they can have dinner as well. We are in a very rough neighborhood, but my kiddos don't give up!

Unfortunately, many of our students are below grade level by more than one grade level in both reading and math.

This is because they have to be grown ups after school, not kids. They have to take care of little brothers and sisters while their parents work multiple jobs. They don't have the time to be kids and just study. I don't like to make excuses, but literally, life often gets in their way.

My Project

Finding high interest and high quality new stories that are important to children, written on their level, and written with them in mind is next to impossible. But Scholastic Magazine does it. Not only does it do it, it does it well.

With the actual magazine, they can work with nonfiction texts that are current and important to them.

The digital component means they can use technology to not just receive information, but create it as well. They also have a google classroom connection which means I can assign and assess learning instantaneously.

These materials will be used in a variety of ways. First as guided reading in small groups. Next as whole class skills review. Finally, as independent work for research and enjoyment.

The sky really is the limit. Thank you for helping make this project a reality for my 4th graders.
