My Students

It's hard to love reading or books when you don't recognize half the words in the book, or have the skills to figure out the words yet.

My students are from a Title I school.

They don't get a lot of help at home, and the majority of them are 1 or 2 grades below reading level. The great thing about my students is everyone of them is so eager to learn and to try. However, the only resources most of these students have are the ones we provide at school. A lot of times they pick up a book and are excited to read it only to discover they can't because they don't know half the words.

My Project

I want to provide my students with a leveled reading library in our classroom so that they will be able to pick up a book that is on their level. If they pick up a book and realize they can read it, they will feel successful and be excited to keep reading. I plan on using the library in my classroom and also sending the books home with students to read and return so they have something to read at home as well. I have used leveled reading books in the past, and have watched my students grow from one level to the next. I have seen how excited they get when they know they have improved one level, and how excited they are to have a whole new set of books to read.

I am so excited to share the love of reading with my eager little second graders!

I truly believe that with the right resources and a little encouragement they will soar to new heights and leave my classroom reading and loving every minute of it!
