This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
As a teacher in a low-income/high poverty school district, my students are faced with challenges on a daily basis both inside and outside of the classroom. Many of my students are being raised in single-parent households. They receive free breakfast and lunch as a Title I school. These are some of the factors that may prevent/hinder their chances of getting ahead early in life and may not provide them with the life experiences that many of us see as "typical".
As kindergarteners, my students are eager to adjust to a larger social group, understand the world in which they live, and to develop good habits and attitudes towards themselves and others, and I am here to give them that opportunity!
My Project
My students participate in guided reading each day. Leveled books will give my students a variety of options with which to build their reading skills. Small group guided reading sets students up for success to gain the foundation necessary for successful readers. It also allows for more hands-on, one-on-one time with each of my students. The small group instruction helps to keep students engaged and excited to be in school. My students are already excited to come to school each day, however, by donating to this project, you will have a part in helping my students in becoming lifelong, strong and independent readers.
