Guided Math - Leading the Learner to Mathematical Success
My students need picture books about mathematical topics, and hands-on materials for better conceptual learning.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Give this project a boost!
A chain reaction of support starts with one share.
My motto is taken from Marina Wright Edelman, "You really can change the world if you care enough." I care, I teach! My students know that I care enough to teach every student and make sure that they get all that they need to learn.
I teach in a suburban school district in the Kansas City area.
My students identify as more urban than suburban. I have a great deal of students that have immigrant parents, single parents, or even grandparents raising them. The students and their parents are hard working people. My students frequently come to school without the proper school supplies. Luckily, our school district has a wonderful foundation that provides school supplies in backpacks for our kids.
Over 85% of the students at my school receive free or reduced school lunch. Over half of my students this school year take home food backpacks for the weekend. Our school is fortunate to have the support of a local church that cleans and stuffs the food backpacks with food from a local food pantry. My students are kind-hearted, thoughtful and generous. Even though they don't have much to give they always try to support our school as best they can. It is a very giving, caring place to learn.
My Project
The class desperately needs picture books to go along with our math curriculum. The students need to hear the math vocabulary in a story context. The math picture books are needed to help build background for new math learning.
We also need more hands-on math materials. The students learn best by seeing, touching and manipulating math objects. Imagine any 6 year old being asked how many vertices a cube has, only to be expected to look at a flat 2-D picture to answer. I suspect many adults would struggle to come up with 8 vertices as the correct answer. My little first graders need to hold the cube in their hands and count with me! It does little good if I am holding the one and only cube!
The donations are going to help all the first graders in my class this year and in future years.
Math curriculum may change, but math concepts do not. These books and materials will be utilized to build student background knowledge and give them increased mathematical confidence.
