Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Technology can be a great equalizer in a classroom with diverse learners. A special education classroom with computers looks like just a regular education classroom. However, when you take a closer look, you will realize how much more a computer provides in special education.

My special education students in grades one through five, come to me for reading, writing and math.

Some of my students spend two hours a day with me while others I see for only an hour. However, regardless of the time spent in my classroom, all of them are either a year to two years behind their peers. Our school is located in the inner city. My students are constantly overcoming challenges that they face in their personal lives. The neighborhood that surrounds them greatly struggles with poverty and crime. The school itself doesn't receive adequate funding to keep up with supplying basic supplies nevertheless the latest technology. I feel that school should be a place they find comfort, and through comfort, they will find success. However, when students have learning disabilities and speech impairments such as mine, the traditional methods of pen and paper does not reach their needs. Computers are engaging as well as motivating for my students, so incorporating them into my classroom makes sense.

My Project

These two, all-in-one computers will give my students access to learning opportunities previously closed to them. With the use of computers in my classroom, I will be able to incorporate educational activities that will allow me to personalize lessons and skills enhancement for each student. Considering my students have their own learning styles, each lesson I present to them has to be approached from several different angles to make sure they understand the concepts. Implementing computers where I could download software to target their specific needs, would greatly achieve this. My students would be able to use a word processor to write, edit and revise paragraphs without the tedious rewriting they do by hand now. A computer would allow them to edit their work without completely rewriting their pieces. The use of reading websites to practice phonics, fluency and comprehension would be highly engaging as well as, math games that target facts and word problems.

The use of computers will promote and extend student learning on a daily basis in my classroom.

Incorporating computers will increase my students' motivation to learn and personalize lessons to each students' individual needs. This technology will increase their independence and will teach them basic, fundamental skills that they are going to need for the rest of their education and beyond.
