My Students

Last year this quote was a cornerstone for our classroom as I worked to redefine what many kids (and adults) view as "failure".

I knew I was onto something when the moment a struggling student received encouragement from a peer, "Don't give up! You haven't failed because you're STILL trying!"

Growth mindset changes present and future potential for students!

My enthusiastic second graders are located in a rural setting. 60% of our student population are on free and reduced lunch. These enthusiastic students share the same potential to learn and grow as the students I taught in California's Central Valley and Denver, Colorado.

Geography does not affect ability, but it impacts opportunity. Please help by filling our classroom with books and resources to solidify a growth mindset!

My Project

Learning to overcome, persevere and problem solve are crucial skills for lifelong success. Last year I wove growth mindset concepts throughout the year and impact was tremendous! Students grew academically and personally.

As the new school year begins I dream of anchoring student's thinking through meaningful read aloud books focused on growth mindset and emotional stability.

These books and characters provide reference points for students, "Remember the character from How Full is Your Bucket?..."

Additionally, I want my students to make a tangible reminder for themselves. We'll make bracelets that with a word for their school year stamped on it. Because the quantity of stamping plates is 50 we'll have enough for each student to make one for someone else allowing the gift of giving to be another foundation for our year.

The geodes are another "stick with you" anchor point for our class. The outside of the geode is rough, often boring but the inside is extraordinarly beautiful.

This is a concrete way for students to have a lifelong example that what's inside a person matters most. Hand-on activities leave a lasting impression so I've ordered enough geodes so every student will have an opportunity to crack it open. Naturally we'll be writing on the topic as well:)

I look forward to creating a classroom community experience by including parents and caregivers in both these hands-on activities.
