Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I teach in an elementary school that serves over 1100 students from PreK to 5th grade and is in one of the largest districts in the nation.

Over 78% of our student population is on free and reduced price lunch and come from very diverse backgrounds and socioeconomic statuses.

I teach second grade in a self-contained classroom. Students at this age are smart, creative, and very inquisitive. Some have attention deficit disorder (ADD) or attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) but that does not stop them from learning. They love learning new things and feeling the sense of accomplishment when they have learned something new. They are also extremely strong and resilient. My students thrive and are excited to learn despite what trials they go through outside of our school walls. They inspire me every day to be the best teacher I can possibly be for them!

My Project

My students have made tremendous growth and have been resilient during this ever changing school year. My students returned to school with anxiety of what was going to happen, and with fear of the unknown. They came wearing masks, not being able to share materials, sitting spaced apart from their peers. Throughout the year, my students took the numerous changes and new rules in stride. They continued to come to school everyday curious, eager to learn, and continue to be kind to one another.

Growing while GLOWING is a black light installation project that will allow children to celebrate all their accomplishments in this crazy year.

This will allow students to enjoy some Glow-tastic fun utilizing black light reactive paints, pencils, and highlighters. There are countless ways to use glow in the dark supplies to learn and have fun! In math, students will be able to learn about geometry by creating three dimensional shapes and angles with the glow sticks. In reading, students will use highlighters and the black light to find answers to questions. Students will love creating "Glow Days," and become excited to learn in a different way!
