My Students

Our students are loving and giving and anxious to learn! Our school is for students with special needs who, because of severe emotional and behavioral issues, have not been able to learn successfully at their regular schools. They learn a little bit differently and we are able to accommodate their differences and keep them in school!

Our school provides a safe place where they can make mistakes, learn coping skills and problem-solving strategies while continuing to be exposed to the district-wide academic curriculum.

Instead of being suspended or removed from the learning environment for extended parts of the day, our daily goal is to keep students in the learning environment.

My Project

Our students are so excited to get the vegetable container garden started for this new school year and while brainstorming about this Health & Wellness Project their ideas started coming non-stop! One student asked, "Besides eating vegetables, what is so healthy about a garden?" Answers came fast and furiously! "We'll be outside in the fresh air." "And out of this classroom!" "And in the sunshine!" "Getting Vitamin D!" "We'll be moving and working!" "Probably sweating!"

Coming up quickly with a list of the obvious needed materials such as: pots, soil, and water hoses the students were very thoughtful about what kind of things they want to grow.

First of all, the students want to grow vegetables that they will be able to cook at eat at school - peas, carrots, and beans were an overwhelming favorite pick for the seeds. The students were concerned about working in the dirt in their school uniforms and wanted some big aprons that would protect their clothes and gloves that would keep their fingernails clean.

We have our garden spot outside with no roof or shelter area and one thing that is essential is a large, sturdy and weatherproof container to keep all of our supplies in so that we can keep them to use all year long.

It will be especially fascinating for them to plant a seed that looks like a bean or pea that will grow into a plant that will then produce pods filled with beans and peas that look just like that seed they planted. They will learn how that one bean seed, if taken good care of, will produce a whole bucket load of beans!
