This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

Responsibility, caring, respect, and trustworthiness are some of the pillars that the students of the 5th/6th grade Leadership Club work to uphold. The students volunteer to help before school, during recesses, and after school; they clean up around campus, return lost/found items, greet visitors, help at schoolwide events, and create items to benefit our local community. The students were recently given the opportunity to take over a set of raised garden beds with the plan by the students that they can grow vegetables that can be used by the local school community while also benefiting the club.

The vegetable garden will play many roles.

The primary reason for the garden will be to grow and harvest vegetables, which is a community project that will also benefit the members. Students will gain life skills by learning how to plan and maintain a garden, maintain irrigation, and will develop communication skills by communicating with local community members who can provide guidance. A third reason is to develop connection and community to school. Research has shown that school gardens are credited with encouraging cooperation during learning and building students social and emotional capacities. They offer students a chance to connect to school in nontraditional ways and give an opportunity for students to showcase skills that might not be seen within a traditional classroom.

The supplies within this project will help students build upon the garden that was gifted to the students. The garden only consists of raised beds and does not have an irrigation system. For our garden to maintain over the hot summer months dry weekends, we will need to have a system within the boxes. The supplies of tools are needed for the 40 students as they rotate through the garden during our after-school meetings and their breaks.
