My Students

Imagine only having access to fruit Monday through Friday! We are a high poverty school with most students receiving free or reduced lunch. They devour the fruit on their trays during lunchtime. Produce costs prevent many of our families from having fruits and veggies in their homes.

I have a FABULOUS class of 22 fourth graders in Georgia.

We are a group 50% boys, 50% girls. I have a mixture of Caucasian, African American, Bi-racial, Hispanic, and Asian students. One child has qualified as gifted and 2 of my students are autistic. The majority of my students qualify for free/reduced lunch. They are an eclectic mix of students, but they blend well together. I haven't taught a class this large in many years, but with budget cuts come larger class sizes. It is very hard to meet everyone's needs when you have a larger class. There is a TREMENDOUS gap in ability in my classroom, but all of my students can benefit from this project by getting their hands dirty, learning more about how fruits and veggies are grown, and documenting the process to share with others.

My Project

Because children spend much of their time in the school setting, schools have the opportunity to play a large role in the adoption of healthy living habits. There are many ways to present nutrition education, but gardening provides a fun, interactive way to teach and learn healthy eating habits. Benefits of using gardening to teach nutrition include: -Providing a site for hands-on learning and to practice using the scientific method. -Exciting children about eating fruits and vegetables that they grew themselves. I envision students being active participants in the scientific process by growing their own fruits and vegetables. The digital camera will help us capture each step in the process and document our results. This documentation will help us create posters and share what we've learned with other kids as well. Please help us garden together and FEED USA!

This project is important to me because it blends academic skills with real life application.

Student will learn about the scientific method, but more importantly they will gain skills to grow their own fruits and vegetables at home. Giving students practical knowledge through this project will help FEED USA!
