Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

The students in my class are from diverse backgrounds including Hispanic, Caucasian, African American and Indian. Several of them receive English as a Second Language classes. Our students all receive free breakfast and lunch daily. Our school is located in an urban district.

My students miss being at school tremendously!

We were really a community of learners and the children really enjoyed helping each other through challenging assignments and activities. They were on their way to finding their voices and learning to enthusiastically share what they were learning.

What they miss most is their morning social-emotional learning time, when they were allowed to participate in an activity of their choice for thirty minutes that would be a relaxing and calming way to start the day.

Some students learned to crochet, some learned origami, some worked on art projects or read books, really anything they wanted to do that helped them to feel settled before the start of the academic day.

My Project

Our day at school started every morning with my students engaging in 30 minutes of activities of their choice that were calming, engaging, and important to them.

When I asked my students what they missed most about being at school, they told me that it was their time in the morning when they had the opportunity to connect with each other while engaging in activities they really enjoyed before the start of academic learning.

My students regularly participated in classroom cooking activities, science and art activities.

So I surveyed my students for a list of supplies to be able to continue with the activities they enjoyed at school. Students wished for arts and crafts supplies, STEM activities, "grow your own garden" supplies, chemistry sets, butterfly hatching kits, crocheting supplies and crochet books, cookbook, origami paper and books, puzzles and sewing supplies. Some items are included so that students can better participate in our virtual classes, such as dry erase pockets and markers, paper, and notebooks pencil sharpeners and rulers.
