Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Young scholars face many challenges, and reading is one of their biggest struggles. One way to help them is by allowing them to explore various texts and practice their sight words via literacy-based activities.

My second grade scholars are in a CTT, or Collaborative Team Teaching, class, which is part of the NYC public school system.

They live in a high poverty, multicultural community, and the majority of them live in shelters and come from low income families. Our class consist of two teachers - one gen. ed. teacher and one special ed. teacher, and 29 young scholars.

My Project

I have requested resources to help encourage independent and partnership reading among my scholars. Basic zip lock baggies have provided temporary means for my scholars to store their reading materials, but have been costly due to how often they need to be replaced. I have requested more durable, longer-lasting book pouches for in school use, and a separate set of book baggies for books they can borrow to read at home. I have also requested pillows so that some of my students can read more comfortably on our classroom floor with their partners. Dry Erase materials would greatly help replace our old, dried up markers that are often used for word study work.

Your assistance in funding these resources would greatly help my scholars organize their reading materials both at school and at home, as well as provide necessary learning tools they need to grow into successful readers.
