Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My main focus for this campaign is the social-emotional well-being of students with positive behavior rewards and secondly to give multiple opportunities for critical thinking and problem solving that goes hand in hand with student success on both academic and social-emotional levels.

The students I have the privilege of teaching are middle school, grade 8 science students.

These students include a large portion of ELL (English Language Learning) students and 100% of students receive free and reduced lunches. Many of the students have a low basic understanding of science concepts covered according to Nevada state standards for science education. Most importantly, many of my students exhibit anxiety and school-related behaviors that stem from both a lack of success in the classroom and low social-emotional skill sets.

In addition, my students also struggle with basic speaking, listening, and writing skills that are needed for moving on to high school as well as college and career readiness. Using games to encourage teamwork and conversation, with my advisory class is one way I hope to build upon current mindsets and social-emotional well-being.

In the end, well-being and learning go hand in hand.

My Project

Posters and positive behavior reinforcers will address the social-emotional needs of students by setting up a mindful and meaningful classroom. For instance, creating bulletin boards that correspond to our "Leader in Me" mindset we are incorporating for students beginning this year. I will also be reating a classroom store to go along with our schools' positive behavior program to award students for their positive behaviors in the school setting.

Other items that also serve social-emotional needs are incentive items such as candy for quick feedback for positive participation in class.

Also, fidget toys for our classroom store to reward students for our positive behavior emphasis we have incorporated school-wide.

Classroom supplies such as markers, pencils, folders, and such will assure all students have what they need to be successful in the classroom.

Since my science room is short on stools the 4 new stools will allow the seating needed to accommodate my students. Some of which are currently sitting on counters in the back of the classroom.

The remote clicker will allow me to present our web-based science program while moving about the room. I will be able to have total access to my computer while maintaining proximity to my students.
