My Students

It's crazy to think that my students are only mine for about 10 months. The cohesiveness present among my students would make you think we'd been together for far longer than 3rd grade. This just confirms that "It's kind of fun to do the impossible." -Walt Disney

You know you've got a fun classroom when you and your students sing part of the Mickey Mouse March as your attention getting signal!

My classroom focuses on instilling a love for learning as well as an understanding of the magic of imagination. My 25 little Mouseketeers love my Disney themed classroom and often refer to it as Disneyland. I teach a group of fun loving, creative, and caring students who exhibit perseverance on a daily basis. Our school has an open-space concept, meaning that while we do have separate classrooms, they are all joined by a hallway at the back and we have no classroom doors (it's a hard one to explain). Learning in open-space allows the students to develop a stronger sense of community because other students, teachers, and the principal are always within reach. My class loves to share things from home with each other, donate odds and ends to our class store, share their ideas about their learning, and just be together. Their hearts and minds amaze me daily.

My Project

One of the most important skills I want my students to develop while in my class is critical thinking. The kits included in the STEM Bundle will require my students to think differently about the task at hand, plan their course of action, collaborate, make their plan a reality, see if it works, and potentially revise their plan (and repeat!). Activities such as these have more than one correct answer, something my students are still trying to get used to. Being able to participate in these hands-on activities will prepare my students for success in the rest of their schooling and in their lives outside of school. This bundle also provides materials that allow me to combine our science, math, and language arts instruction. By doing this, I am able to provide my students access to grade level standards AND spend more time on these activities, providing my students with the time they need to be successful.

The emphasis on STEM (science, tech, engineering, and math) as a whole is relatively new to the classroom and VERY new to my students.

In their 1st few years of school they have already learned that the teacher will tell you exactly what you need to do and that there is always only one correct answer. This STEM Bundle will do great work in allowing my students to learn that they can find many answers by investigating without my direction. This will help foster independent, critical thinkers.
