Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Our students come to our school library excited to read and excited for us to read to them. When I finish reading a story during their visit, the kindergarten and first graders clap and ooooh and ahhhh. They are excited to pick out their books and squeal in delight when I tell them that they get to take them home for a whole week, begging me for their favorite picture book with "the bunny" (Creepy Carrots) and Elephant & Piggie books. The older students flock to the graphic novels and popular series and some students even pop into the library before school just in case someone has returned a copy of Babysitter's Club so they can snag it.

I love that our students are excited about reading and I would love to provide them with more resources to help nourish their curiosity and really foster their love of reading.

I want our library to be a magical place where anything is possible for our students. If they can see it, they can be it.

My Project

These books will be used during weekly library visits and checked out to students to help develop their reading skills through targeted, high interest, non-fiction and graphic novel titles. The students who will be checking out these titles are a part of an AR reading program and they use their library books within the program, both at home and at school.

It is important that we continue to develop our library collection by engaging our students in active learning through non-fiction titles that are relevant to their interests to help motivate them to grow both as readers and students.

Graphic novels are also an important part of this project, because they easily encourage even the most reluctant of readers to reach for a book in the library.
