My Students

When you step into my first grade classroom, you will find a community of children that cares deeply about each other and the things they are learning. Our classroom is located in south Harlem, and almost all of our students qualify for free or reduced price lunch.

My first graders model kindness, compassion, and teamwork as they share and listen to each others' ideas in morning meeting, work as a team on a Lego structure, or take turns playing a math game as partners.

All the while there is cheerful, diligent hum about the room as they pick out new books to read, stretch out words in a writing piece, or work through a tricky math problem. These first graders have opened their hearts and minds to each other and to new ideas, new challenges, new discoveries, and new adventures.

My Project

This year our team has decided to revamp our reading units to better reflect the diversity of our community and to meet the values and urgency of this moment in history.

We will teach our students about freedom, responsibility, advocacy, and activism, and we will do it through our reading curriculum.

We'll discuss what it means to be proud of our identities, respect the identities of others, and to take care of each other in our community and country. In order to that, we are going to start small and look at the ways we uphold these values within our own families.

We have chosen texts that feature diverse families and family relationships. We've also chosen texts with rich characters and story arcs that give us opportunities to teach into the reading strategies and higher order thinking skills that our students need. We hope you can support our students by contributing to this project. Thank you!
